Undoubtedly, a dog bandana is a great accessory for your furry friends. So, how to choose a good bandana, and what do different colors mean for the dog bandanas? In this ultimate guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about dog bandanas.
OK, let's go.
Why do dogs wear bandanas?
Dog bandanas are usually triangular pieces of fabric that are suitable as fashionable decorations around the dog's neck. Don't underestimate this small piece of fabric, it has many uses.
For Fashion Purposes
Bandits are fashionable for any dog. We can customize dog bandanas so furry parents and their dogs can wear matching outfits. Like us wear beautiful clothes, our furry friends need make-up too.
Prevents drool and dog hair from spreading everywhere
Bandits help catch your dog's drool and hair. This prevents drool and hair from spreading throughout the house, it is difficult to sweep and you have to use a pet stain eraser.
Keep warm
Bandits can keep your dog's neck and collar warm during the colder months, just like the scarves we wear around our necks in the winter.
Insect Repellent
Bandits can also act as an insect barrier, keeping insects away from your dog's neck. A dog's neck is particularly susceptible to fleas and ticks. You can also spray some flea spray on the bandit.
Keep Calm
If your dog is often anxious, you can spray a dog-friendly stress relief spray on the bandage to keep him calm.
Tell the difference
Tell the difference between two similar-looking dogs: If you have adopted two dogs from the same litter and they look very similar, different bandanas can help others tell them apart.
Send a message
Bandits are a great way to communicate to others if there is something wrong with your dog. You can simply print a warning message on the bandit and others will notice it.
Used as a first aid
If injured, you can simply use the bandage to tie it over the wound like a bandage as a temporary solution.
Safety reminders
Reflective bandanas for dogs are often used for safety, especially during night walks, to ensure visibility

Blue Bandana: Service dog or a working dog in training. It indicates that the dog has a specific role and should not be distracted.
Orange Bandana: Needs space from other dogs or may not get along with other pets. It serves as a warning to others.
White Bandana: Medical alert. This bandana can indicate that the dog is blind, deaf, or has another disability, prompting others to be more considerate.
How to Choose the Right Size of Bandana?
Measure Dog’s Neck1. Measure Your Dog’s Neck
Use a flexible tape measure to measure the circumference of your dog’s neck where the collar typically sits. If you don’t have a tape measure, you can use a piece of string and then measure the string with a ruler.
2. Consider Bandana Adjustability
Many bandanas tie around the neck, so it’s important to allow a few extra inches for tying the knot. A loose fit is essential for comfort, ensuring the bandana is snug but not too tight.
Add 1 to 2 inches to your dog’s neck measurement for small dogs and 2 to 3 inches for larger dogs to account for tying.
3. Consider Your Dog’s Fur
Dogs with thick or long fur may need a slightly larger size to accommodate their fur’s volume. This is important to ensure the bandana doesn’t get too tight or buried in the fur.
4. Account for Your Dog’s Activity Level
If your dog is very active or loves to run and play, you may want to select a smaller size or tighter fit so the bandana doesn’t slip off during activities.
5. Check Size Guidelines from the Manufacturer
Every brand might have different sizing standards, so be sure to check the manufacturer’s sizing chart.
Let's take a look with general size chart:
| Size | Neck Circumference | Recommended Dog Breeds |
|---|
| Small | Up to 12.5″ neck | Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Pomeranians |
| Medium | Up to 17″ neck | Cocker Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Beagles |
| Large | Up to 22″ neck | Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Boxers |
How to put a dog bandana on?
1. Fold the bandana in half diagonally to create a triangle.
2. Next, place the bandana around your pet's neck and tie in a square knot.
3. Pull on the rope ends to tighten the knot so that the rope ends cannot move further.
4. Make sure you can still fit two fingers underneath and your dog does not feel uncomfortable.
How to make a dog bandana?
Measure and select the appropriate length of fabric. Fold one side of the fabric up from the edge to form a triangle until the length of the angled triangle edge is equal to the length of the dog's neck plus about 8 inches. This will give you enough fabric to tie it around your dog's neck.
Cut the diagonal edge. Cut a second piece of fabric of the same size.
Sew the front sides of the bandana together, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, start in the middle of one of the straight edges and sew along the edge, stopping about 3 inches from where you started sewing. Leave a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Using the seam allowance, flip the fabric over to the front side. Gently push the corners outward.
Press the bandana, making sure to fold the remaining area of fabric over so that the bandana can be turned over.
Topstitch all the way around the bandana.
This will complete a dog bandana.
